The story of Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter has occupied a central place in media attention since it first broke. Elon began heavily investing in Twitter back in January of 2022, eventually reaching a 9% stake in Twitter, and so becoming the largest shareholder as of March 14th. Then there was a whole series of fiascos, including whether Musk would join the Twitter board, the price of shares, an attempt to prevent Musk from buying Twitter, the presences and number of bot and fake accounts on Twitter, then a lawsuit to force Musk to buy Twitter as he tried to back out of the deal, then the final acquisition. For a better timeline of these events, read more here:
Three days ago (10/28/22) Elon closed the deal to purchase Twitter, and immediately began his celebration – This was seemingly one of the greatest victories over the forces of darkness and tyranny in recent decades. Elon’s jovial celebration including a knee slapping dad joke “let that sink in” – as he carried a real porcelain sink into Twitter HQ. While not the point of this article, be warry of those self-styled “very pious Christians” who think it is unbecoming of a Christian to throw a party to celebrate the downfall of the wicked. You saw this all over social media when Roe was overturned. In both Old and New Testaments, the people of God shouted and marched in triumph and threw great feasts, to celebrate their victories, but that’s a topic for another day, as is God’s use of natural revelation and natural law to protect humanity from premature destruction.
The relevant point about Elon’s takeover of Twitter is that he immediately ousted the leadership of Twitter, including CEO, CFO CLO, and others. He did not embark on a lengthy rehabilitation project, or concern himself with securing their future employment at Meta or Alphabet. Musk nearly immediately secured whatever golden parachutes were required by law (some speculate that he expedited this process to avoid having to pay even larger exit packages). Musk immediately made those payouts, and established himself as the new CEO (Chief Twit, after all). He did not give them emeritus positions, or name buildings after them either.
Why do we as reformed evangelicals not have the same intestinal fortitude or spine to do the same with our institutions?
Instead of widespread firings of everyone in leadership who orchestrated the Marxist revolution in reformed evangelicalism, we have allowed them to keep their positions and motte and baily themselves, right and left, in and out, as they parlay their way back into the realm of those who can be trusted for truth. They maintain their busy speaking schedules, book deals, and podcasts. The guild is being rebranded, and the old TGC & T4G leadership are reconvening without even so much as half an apology. While Al Mohler is speaking at so called “conservative” conferences, the self-professed Critical Race Theorist, Jarvis Williams, is still teaching at SBTS. Lig Duncan speaks at a conference celebrating the courage and faithfulness of the non-conformists, while very large sums of money flow from men like billionaire James Riady into the pockets of both left-wing politicians (like the Clintons) and America’s reformed leaders, many of which have recently spoken at conferences at his church in Indonesia. Then we are surprised when those same leaders begin saying that the moral issues at play in United States elections aren’t so black and white, and that the Clinton’s aren’t that bad.
Instead of defenestrating these men, we allow them back into positions of power within our movement, while they remain unrepentant. Only the slightest forms of behavior modification can be observed, but that is only because of the ground swell against the blasphemous and obviously evil Woke agenda pushed them back on their heels. Mom’s for Liberty showed more masculine courage than tens of thousands of conservative reformed pastors over the last two years.
So I challenge you today, on this Reformation day, 2022. Don’t post a tribute to the reformers if you prefer to go along to get along. Don’t honor the legacy of Luther if you won’t risk your employment or enrollment by raising your hand and speaking up in the office, board room, or classroom. If you’re not willing to lose that wealthy donor who told you to stop addressing these moral issues, maybe it’s well past time to hang it up, and go collect sea shells.
For the rest of us, it’s time to go full-Elon today, and fire all of the leaders who built the demonic woke church machine over the last decade. It’s not good enough to merely not be a Marxist. You must be courageously & unwaveringly anti-marxist.
